Get to Know Arlington, VA

What many people refer to as simply Arlington, VA is actually a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It has the same boundaries as the U.S. Census Bureau-census-designated area of Arlington, which is the second-largest principal city of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. As a result, the county is often referred to in the region simply as Arlington or Arlington, Virginia.

The land that became Arlington was originally donated by Virginia to the U.S. government to form part of the new federal capital district of Columbia (Washington D.C.) around the turn of the 19th century. In 1846, Congress returned the land southwest of the Potomac River donated by Virginia due to issues involving Congressional representation and the abolition of slavery. The county changed its name to Arlington in 1920 to avoid confusion with the adjacent City of Alexandria which was also part of the newly divided Congressional district.

If you’re moving to Arlington, Virginia because you work with or in the U.S. federal government, then you’ll find that this area suits your needs quite well. Due to the county's close proximity and ties to the capital, Arlington is the headquarters for many departments and agencies of the federal government. These departments include but are not limited to the Department of Defense (DoD) at the Pentagon, Drug Enforcement Administration, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It is also home to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The many federal agencies, government contractors, and service industries mean you’ll be surrounded by people with whom you have many things in common.

“It has a history, culture and identity all its own, and in some ways, Virginia represents the true identity of America.”

Arlington is also the location of national memorials and museums that are sure to interest any history buff who’s moving to Arlington:

  • Arlington National Cemetery
  • Pentagon Memorial
  • Marine Corps War Memorial
  • United States Air Force Memorial

Add in the fact that Arlington, VA is the highest-income county in the United States by median family income and we’re sure you couldn’t be more excited to be moving to such a wonderful area.
