What to do with your mattress when you move

In the process of moving, one often faces some difficult decisions. When it comes time to decide what to ship with the relocation movers and what to leave behind, there are often a lot of factors in play. One of the most vexing objects to consider is a mattress.

It is tempting to just get rid of your old mattress because it is large and unwieldy. However, mattresses are quite expensive and can be difficult to dispose of. Instead of losing sleep, here are a few ways to deal with this quandary.

Sell it
Instead of bringing it with you, you can try and sell it. Depending on its condition, you could actually fetch a decent price for it. People – often in a similar situation to yours – are always looking for a mattress.

Selling it online is always a good option. Hosting a moving sale can be another effective way as well. However, your best bet might be to try and sell it to whoever is moving into your old home. Whether an apartment or a house, it can be convenient for both parties to include mattresses and bed frames with the sale.

Recycle it
If your mattress is old or not worth selling, recycling it might be the best choice. Due to mattresses’ sizes, recycling is not always as easy it sounds. Your first call should be to the merchant from whom you purchased it. Often, they will pick it up from you for a nominal fee.

If that isn’t an option, however, you can try other recycling avenues such as freecycle.org. There are many groups that will pick up and dispose of your mattress for free. Local governments also generally have programs, either regularly or by season, to get rid of large furnishings.

A new one
Once you dispose of your mattress, you will be faced with a new dilemma: how to replace it. If you are moving out of state, this can be particularly problematic. Without testing one out, it is hard to know if you will like it. On the flip side, it is not a particularly appealing option to spend several nights, or even weeks, sleeping on a couch while you wait for a new mattress to be delivered.

Luckily there are a few options. One is to go to a mattress store that has many outlets across the country. This way you can test a mattress to identify one you like and have them send it to your new home the day you get there.

However, in certain circumstances it does make sense to keep your mattress, especially if it is fairly new or if you have grown to love it. Discuss the options for shipping it with your household moving company to see how they would handle the move.
