Preparing your car for a move

With so many things to consider in preparation for a long distance move, it is easy to neglect the one thing you truly need to get you to your new locale: your vehicle. Packing your belongings, cleaning your house, hiring the right household movers and learning about your destination can easily occupy most of your thoughts, leading you to ignore the steps you need to take to get your car ready for the road. However, this oversight could cause serious problems for you, especially if you are moving out of state or even across the country.

With this in mind, it is important (no matter how busy you are!) to make sure your car is up to the journey. Here are a few things to keep in mind while going about this process.

See a mechanic
This may seem obvious, but it is amazing how many people ignore this step. If you are lucky enough to have a mechanic whom you trust completely, beat a direct path to him or her. Not only could this step prevent your car from pulling up lame on some anonymous highway shoulder, it also provides you with the opportunity to discuss the move with the mechanic and see if he or she has any advice about where to find a suitable replacement in your new locale.

This is also a great chance to get some routine work on your car done, even if it isn’t in bad shape. Because you will be driving such a long distance and you will have so much to do once you get to your new home, it is a good idea to have your oil changed, your tires rotated and other procedures that you would have to have done sooner or later anyway.

Consider the climate
This is also a great time to prepare your car for its new home. Learning a little about your destination’s climate and conditions can help you take the precautions necessary to ensure it stays in good condition.

It is also important to consider your route to the destination as well. If you will be driving through different regions that have particular weather factors to consider, you should prepare for them as well. Whether it means getting snow tires or fixing your air conditioning, understanding the environments you will encounter during your move is important.

Another source of concern for a car during a long move is what’s inside it. Too much luggage can bog down a vehicle and even cause damage. It is probably a good idea to utilize long distance moving and storage for the heavier items to avoid causing unnecessary harm to your vehicle.
