It’s never been a secret that price is usually the number one determining factor when making a purchasing decision. Moving is no different.
It’s entirely logical for someone to ask how much moving costs.
Our short answer to that: It depends.
Now, before our answer frustrates you, allow us to explain a few things and clarify why we answered in the manner we did. First, we should look at the main factors causing a homeowner to spend some serious money on moving.
The first factor is the distance your move will cover. The longer the distance, the higher the cost. Plain and simple. Your mileage costs are going to be higher on a move from Georgia to Texas than they would be on a move from Buffalo, NY to Rochester, NY.
The second determining factor is the weight of your shipment. Your mover should inspect your home prior to moving day and provide you with a weight estimate of your possessions to be moved. Moving companies charge by total weight, so the higher the weight the higher the cost. Be sure to tell your mover exactly what you plan on moving. Otherwise, your estimate is likely to be inaccurate.
You’ll also need to consider how much you’ll spend on packing materials and whether you’ll be paying for packing. Professional packing services will also have an impact on your bottom line, so if you would rather have the professionals do the packing, weigh out the cost benefits of the time you’ll spend packing yourself versus having the pros do it.
There are other costs that will contribute to your overall price. Check with your mover if you’re moving into a home with difficult access to see if there are additional costs.
Finally, keep in mind that a do-it-yourself move is the ultimate way to keep your costs down, whether you get a bunch of friends with trucks to help or rent a truck of your own. However, to minimize your stress level, we do suggest that professionals handle everything for you!
