Top Moving Trends for 2015

As the new year begins, it is quite common for people to take a look back at the previous year. As they say, hind sight is 20/20 and looking back can often provide us with perspective on the things we saw  throughout the year. The website has taken a look back at the moving trends in the U.S. for 2015 and found some interesting results. Take a look at the popular moving trends for 2015.

Moving Distance

In 2015, 60.6% of people requesting an estimate for moving costs were moving to another state. Of those moving, about one out of every 10 shipped a vehicle as well.

Size of Move

It is estimated that most Americans are small-home dwellers. This was certainly supported by the data. Most of the people who moved in 2015, moved into one or two bedroom dwellings.

Busiest Moving Times

The summer has always been the most popular time to move due to the warmer weather. The busiest months of 2015 were May-September, accounting for 61.56% of all moves. The busiest day of the week was Friday, followed by Saturday and Monday. July 31st, August 1st and June 30th were the first, second and third busiest moving days respectively.

Routes and Migration

The five busiest moving routes of the year had destinations ending in the South and West. They were: NY → FL; CA → TX; NY → TX; MA → CA; and IL → CA. Even though California is the end point on three of these routes, it actually fell off the list of top 10 inbound states (states with the most immigrating to them). New York, Illinois and New Jersey all make the list of outbound states (more people emigrating from them than immigrating to them).

The data here shows that the South and West are top destinations for out-of-state moves in 2015. It will be very interesting to see what kind of trends take place this year. Perhaps our relatively mild winter will lead to a change in the time of year people choose to move. If you're planning an out-of-state move and need to find a reliable moving company, you can use our Find An Agent tool. Here's to a bright and prosperous 2016.
